A guided tour designed to delve deeper into the artistic and historical aspects of the churches of Lecce. The tour starts from the Naples Gate (Porta Napoli) and continues by visiting the Duomo Square which can be reached along Via Palmieri, one of the main streets of the old city.
The extraordinary baroque facade of the cathedral, overlooking the square, is set in an antithetical manner with the interior (entrance fee) where there is the influence of the typically Neapolitan Baroque that characterizes other cities in italy, with the presence of gold decorations, stucco and polychrome marble. The light enters, almost rarefied, from modern stained glass windows with images of saints and sacred elements, made in 1956 and 2000. We will focus in particular on some of the most significant works, including the canvas of St. Oronzo and that of the Assumption, works by two local artists: Giovanni Andrea Coppola and Oronzo Tiso. The next stop is the Church of St. Irene, built following the architectural model of the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, with its richly adorned altars. St. Oronzo square preserves the votive column of the saint, the Roman amphiteater and the sixteenth-century Sedile Palace. Finally, we will visit the Basilica of Santa Croce with its facade, symbol of the entire artistic periodo f the city. The interior of the Church (entrance fee) is characterized by a more austere space, divided into three naves by two colonnades. The altars preserve paintings by local artists, made between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, following the loss of the original works during the Napoleonic suppressions of the nineteenth century. Next to the presbytery, deprived of the original altar, there are two papier-mache statues from the early 1900s, by the artist Giuseppe Manzo from Lecce. |
