Founded, according to myth, by king Malennius after the vision of a she-wolf under a hoak tree, Lecce amazes with the sumptuousness of its Baroque that expresses itself in an astonishing way on the exteriors, modeling streets and urban spaces with the stunning facades. But Lecce also boasts over two thousand years of history.
The tour starts from the large Triumphal Arch built as a tribute to Emperor Charles V (Porta Napoli), in front of the obelisk built in honour of King Ferdinand of Bourbon. These monuments already allow u sto immediately understand the importance assumed by the city during the Kingdom of Naples. From here the tour continues towards Piazza Falconieri, with the beautiful Marrese Palace, and later in Duomo Square, with the extraordinary 17th century facade of the cathedral and its bell tower soaring above the city’s rooftops with its 70 metres of height. Next to the cathedral stand the Bishop’s Palace and the Palace of the Seminary, buildings that complete the perimeter of the only closed square in Italy. We continue by visiting a papier-maché workshop before reaching the Church of S. Irene, whose architecture was strongly influenced by the Roman Baroque. The next stop is St. Oronzo Square in which you can admire the sixteenth-century Palazzo del Sedile (the ancient Palace of the Town Hall) with the adjoining St. Mark’s Chapel, the Saint Oronzo’s Column and, above all, the imposing Roman Amphitheatre. The tour ends with a visit to one of the most famous symbols of the city: the facade of the Basilica of Santa Croce and the adjacent Palazzo dei Celestini. |
